Develop your will.

If you’re new to this blog or my podcast, you should know this right away – I’m not into Bro Science or “Life Hacks”, and I’m not into being slick.

I like to keep things raw and honest and do my best to cut the bullshit.

This is one simple (but not easy) way to develop your strength of will every single day.

It’s also a simple sack check to see you’ve got a pair.

There’s no way around it. If you can’t do this, you’re just being a pussy.

It’s that simple.

There are many benefits to what I’m about to advocate, and there are many “life hack” blogs posts about this that go into it in much greater detail, and if you’re interested in that, I suggest you Google this subject and research it a bit yourself. I’ll touch on these benefits briefly here as well, but for me, the most valuable benefit of this daily exercise of personal will is discipline and power over oneself.

I’m talking about taking a cold shower every day.

Yep. That’s it.

Sounds easy? Do it for the next 30 days. Commit to it right now.

Now that you’ve read this, you know that you have to do it, because you know the only reason not to is weakness and softness (aka being a wimp).

I’ve been living in Los Angeles for many years, and I’ve occasionally ended a shower with cold water and thought that was an accomplishment, but I’ve been back up in the Pacific Northwest where I grew up for a while, and I’m here to tell you… if you live somewhere where snow was just on the ground a couple of months prior, the water is COLD.

I haven’t taken a warm shower in more than six weeks.

I said that this was a simple way to develop personal will and creative discipline, but I didn’t say that it was easy. It’s not. That’s the point.

I usually bring my phone in and set the timer for five minutes before jumping in, and I literally have some adrenaline going before I do. I literally hear myself saying “Get some!” over and over out loud as I get in there and face it. It makes me laugh a little bit, but usually not until it’s over. When the water is winter cold like it is up here right now, it hurts. It makes the skin on my head and neck tighten up. My entire body gets beet red. I get angry. I often find myself breathing hard and gritting my teeth. My heart races, and it often literally makes my balls ache. It’s not easy. The cold and the difficulty is always the same, but my strength and discipline grows, and to be honest… I feel fucking amazing afterward every single time.

Before I go on about that a bit, I want to briefly hit on some of the other benefits that you can research yourself.

Among them are:

Okay… now that I got  that out of the way, I just want to get back to what I know for a fact these things do for me.

They increase my will.

They increase my inner strength and discipline, and discipline equals freedom.

Discipline also equals creativity.

If you haven’t read Steven Pressfield‘s The War of Art, go do it now.

If you can’t afford it, go to your library and get it. Read it. No excuses.

It goes hand in hand with taking a daily five minute freezing cold shower.

Now that you’ve read this, I’ve got in your head. You must do it for yourself.

It’s a daily sack check as a man and an artist.

“You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things.”

-Ray Bradbury
